The Canada Revenue Agency and most of the provincial finance ministries provide a strong incentive called the Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED or sometimes simplified to SRED) investment tax credit (ITC) for Canadian companies to improve their products or processes. Combined, they will return between 20% & 44.75% of eligible costs back to you. In the case of Canadian owned and controlled private corporations, this could mean a refund regardless of whether or not you have paid taxes.
